Sanibel Island and Fort Meyers Beach

Sanibel Island is a magical place!

The amazing thing is that even though the last hurricane was devastating, it has already rebounded.  The Sanibel Marina where we stayed, was under 15 feet of water during that hurricane and surprisingly, all of their docks were intact because the boats that were tossed about and disappeared were well above the dock post height.

One of the highlights of this marina, was that every morning, you find two fresh blueberry muffins at your door.  Yum. The other highlight was the dolphins who greeted us on our way in and then played right near the boat.

On Wednesday, Jan and I rode our bikes 1.5 miles (and Don walked) to the Billy's Bike rental to get a third bike. We then biked back toward the marina, stopped for breakfast at The Lighthouse Cafe and biked another 2 miles to the beach and actual lighthouse.

The Sanibel Island Lighthouse was one the first lighthouses on Florida's Gulf coast north of Key West and the Dry Tortugas.  The iconic 98-foot iron skeleton tower was first lit on August 20, 1884, and has a spiral staircase beginning about 10 feet above ground.  The grounds are open, but the lighthouse is not.

When we walked the beach to see the lighthouse, we got the extra pleasure of spotting another manatee near the shore.

On Thursday, we took a quick trip over to Fort Meyers Beach!  More beach time, as it was only a short but hot walk from the Moss Marina. While jumping the waves a man on the shore kept motioning to Jan to turn around.  When we did, we saw a dolphin swimming just 15 feet or so away!  So exciting!  He/she stayed there quite a while.

That night, we walked the town and had dinner at "Snug Harbor." Yummy meals and a Key Lime martini to sip on.

We woke bright and early today, to see Janet off. Her Uber picked her up at 6 am and she made it safely home to Portland.  We'll miss her.

Spent the rest of the day cleaning and doing laundry in preparation for our next guests - Ed (Don's youngest brother) & Heather!  We did manage to get in another trip to the beach and are now barbecuing chicken on the boat for dinner!
