Hallelujah - We Crossed our Wake! (St. Augustine to Jacksonville)

Way back when, in March 2024 we started the America Great loop from Lambs Marina in Jacksonville. On Saturday, May 16th of this year we "crossed our wake" by returning to Lambs Marina!  

In actuality, we made the trip in roughly 13 months.  We took a 3-month trek in 2024, a 7- month trek in 2025 and 3-months this year. Over 6,000 total miles. We docked at marinas most often, but enjoyed anchoring, especially in Canada.

Boy were we novices when we started out.  Every time we returned from home, we had to relearn the electronics.  Pretty soon, however, we had our start-up and shut-down routines down pat. Usually, I did the heavy lifting of the fenders (my kettle balls), threw the lines to the dock hands, as Don pulled Cady Girl into or away from the dock.

The locks were probably the most fun and sometimes frustrating along the way!  We went through locks in the Erie Canal, the Oswego canal, the Trent-Severn waterway in Ontario the US Inland River system and Florida.

We also passed under every kind of drawbridge imaginable, my favorite being the Bascule bridges. Cady Girl navigated through depths of 3 (ugh) to 600 feet, and waves from 0 - 10 feet (double ugh).

We met people from Canada, New Zealand, Australia, England, France, Germany and of course, many US States.  

The best beaches were in West Coast of Florida and Michigan. White sand and clear blue/green water.

We're continuing our journey for another week, taking Cady Girl to Savannah and flying home for Reese's (granddaughter) graduation.

You may hear from us again, as we will store Cady Girl in Charleston until the next lucky boat owner "shows me the money."

I'm sure you've been wondering where we've been.  We've been landlubbers - staying in a house, sleeping in a real (no-boat) bed and doing laundry! And drinking (that's Don's addition). It's been family time with Don's sister Anne, husband, John, niece Lakie, husband Kevin and grandniece Parker! And site seeing in Mystic & Stonington CT. Anne and John are fantastic hosts, tour guides and chauffeurs! For those that do not know Mystic, it was a significant Connecticut seaport with more than 600 ships built over 135 years starting in 1784.  It is now best known for its charm, downtown area, the Mystic River Bascule bridge and the Mystic Seaport Museum. If you love boats and the seafaring ways of old, this is the place for you. One highlight of the visit was meeting our great niece, Parker!  She is a busy young lady but took to us right away. 2026 Adventure Begins

We're BACK on the WATER! Let's start by explaining how Cady Girl got from South Haven Michigan to today: Well, first of all, we bused, Uber'd, and then flew to French Polynesia for a wonderful, once in a lifetime experience with great friends! Cady Girl stayed in South Haven - watched over by some great Harbor Hosts! In October Don flew to Chicago and rented a car to get back to South Haven.  He then did a solo speed run from South Haven to Chicago via Lake Michigan!  He met his brother, Dave there and they cruised the Cal-Sag Waterway, an industrial river access around South Chicago. Per the Captain, this was a fascinating study of the on-going de-industrialization of the United States. From there, they hung a left to the Illinois River and Dave departed in Peoria , IL - home of Caterpillar! Don soloed to St. Louis where his friend Gary joined him and they reached the Mighty Mississippi! The river traffic in St. Louis was intense - commercial, pleasure, ferries, and river ...

The Loop - Part 2 - Chesapeake Bay north to Canada and back to the USA!

 May 7, 2025 We're back to looping!  Hooray!  We departed Kent Island today and motored to Dundalk, which is a suburb of Baltimore about 35 miles by water!  Took us 3+ hours! First of all, thanks to Ed and Heather for the generosity and time!  Always fun "hanging" out with them! And so happy to see brother Dave, Gulmira and Sanzhar - thanks for the great dinner.  Also had a short visit with Bess! And spent two days with my friend Jill who moved to Alexandria this past year,. She's my "Oregon" buddy even though we met at UC Davis, Trip to Baltimore included passing under the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, passing the Pride of Baltimore II, and getting out of the shipping lane at the request of a Panamanian freighter, named "Diva."
