August 28 - September 4: Saugatuck & South Haven

Just the two of us again.  More work, especially since Lake Michigan was rough - Ugh! Enough already.

Anyway, we made it to Saugatuck on Thursday and spent two enjoyable days there. Historically, the city of Saugatuck evolved from the indigenous homeland of the Odawa & Potawatomi nations to a late 19th century lumber and shipbuilding port; and is now an art colony and tourist destination.

We rode our bikes, went to their local farmers market, walked around, had coffee at a cute little spot called Base Camp, went to the local drug store that has been there since the 1905 with the soda fountain still in business; and then rode back to the boat. Saugatuck has boat rentals of bumper boats with umbrellas and 1950's era electrified boats. Pretty Fun!  We also found Don's Uncle George & Aunt Martha Wigglesworth's summer home!

On Friday we rode our bikes to Douglas, toured the museum there, which had a restored surfboat, and then road to Douglas Beach, one of the many sand dune areas.  Had a scrumptious root beer float at the Douglas Root Beer Barrel!

Saturday, we left for South Haven with smooth seas!  HOOrAY!

Since it was Labor Day weekend, the Black River, which South Haven sits on, was full of boats, dinghies, and more boats!  It was like a parade all weekend and we had front row seats!

South Haven has a strong connection to the water, with the historic harbor, a pier-to-pier river walk, and the Michigan Maritime Museum.  Needless to say, Don went to the latter.

The beaches were lovely, so we spent two days there (one on South Beach, and one on North Beach).  On Tuesday we took the dinghy up the Black River to explore and met with the AGLCA Harbor Hosts.  They were lovely!  And so helpful!  Also had docktails with fellow loopers! Imagine that.

Today we are busy putting Cady Girl to rest for a month, and tomorrow we leave for another more tropical adventure!

Smooth sailing, happy trails, be well and most of all, have FUN!
