July 6 - 8: Oswego - Sackets Harbor -Clayton NY

We left Oswego Sunday morning and easily motored to Sackets Harbor, NY. Doing that, we entered our First Great Lake - Lake Ontario, and it was a smooth, beautiful ride! It was hot, the water was super clear, so we stopped in the middle of our ride and took a swim!

Sackets Harbor is a darling little village overlooking Lake Ontario and it is a designated New York Heritage Area with historic sites dating back to the war of 1812.  We walked the village, listened to some music in the battleground park and had some yummy ice cream!

On the 7th we motored to Clayton NY.  This was a much rougher ride until we entered the St. Lawrence River.  Clayton is on the northern edge of NY and minutes from the Canadian border. It is a cute little town nestled in the 1000 Islands region and home to the Antique Boat Museum. It boasts great restaurants, a river walk and shopping.

We spent more than two hours in the museum and had a tour of La Duchesse, a 106' houseboat built in 1903 for hotelier George Boldt. Boldt was manager of NYC's Waldorf-Astoria hotel.  The houseboat was used as an elegant summer residence until she was donated to the museum and it was also owned by the Rand-McNally family during and after WWII.

We're off to the thousand islands tomorrow and maybe Canada!
