July 1 - July 5 Sylvan Beach - Brewerton - Oswego NY (Erie Canal and Oswego Canal
We left Ilion on July 1 and motored to Sylvan Beach - just 4 locks (#19 - 22). Sylvan Beach is a cute resort community on the shore of Oneida Lake. The lake is a popular location for fishing, boating and swimming. We docked for free which was nice and could walk everywhere. We spent two days there and even went swimming in the lake and listened to a band one evening! They had a beach resort carnival with rides right out of the 1950s.
On the 3rd we made a quick run across Oneida Lake to Brewerton and the Ess-Kay Marina. Brewerton is considered a suburb of Syracuse. And Ess-Kay Marina is full-service marina where you can get most anything you need for your boat. Don had ordered 16 gallons of motor oil and a water pump impellor in advance, so he spent one morning doing Engine Room yoga again, while I biked it to a laundromat! The marina had a barbecue on the 3rd and the city had fireworks and a boat parade. We met lots more loopers and had a wonderful visit. On the 4th there were even more fireworks and boy were they loud! They were only about a 1/4 mile down the river! But they were beautiful.
We left Brewerton this morning passing through our last lock on the Erie Canal, entering the Oswego canal and going through 7 more locks before docking in Oswego. The town of Oswego is at the mouth of the Oswego River and Lake Ontario! Oswego is known as "The Port City of Central New York" and is recognized for its rich maritime history, stunning Lake Ontario location and a vibrant cultural scene. In a few days. Canada here we come!
