Norfolk - Hampton - Cape Charles - Onancock VA
Where to I begin???
When we left Norfolk, we had barely gone 1 mile and the US Coast Guard hailed us and came aboard to do an inspection. YIKES! Anyway, an hour later, they left us with just two warnings:
1. We needed a sign to notify our guests that they could not dump their garbage overboard
2. We needed a USCG book, that they said we would probably never use. Go figure!
NO FINES.
After that, I navigated through one of the busiest seaports in the US over to Hampton VA. We moored at the Safe Harbor, Bluewater. The marina was ok but the restaurant onsite had the best crab dip with homemade pita chips! YUM.
On May 3rd, Lisa and Don Hollwedel joined us - what fun to have them! We took the tender over to Hampton and walked around, but there wasn't really much going on. Hampton is the home of Catherine Johnson, the mathematician who worked with NASA and calculated data for the astronauts.
On the 4th, we motored over to Cape Charles Virginia. It was a rough trip across the Chesapeake, cloudy weather and one of us lost our lunch (I won't say who).
Cape Charkes was a great little town, founded in 1600's and visited by George Washington. It is the southernmost town on the DelMarva peninsula. On Sunday, May 5th we rented a golf cart and toured the town, went to hear live music at the Cape Charles Brewing Company, played miniature golf at Cape Charles Mini Golf and had margaritas in honor of Cinco de Mayo; we walked the boardwalk and put our toes in the ocean and finished the day by dining at the Shanty.
May 7th was Don Hollwedel's birthday, so of course, we celebrated. We motored over to Onancock, VA, a vibrant community and art colony that dates back to the 1600's. Don taught school at Onancok High School 45 years ago. The town is small in population but appears robust and affluent in most parts of the city. We toured Ker Place built in 1799. The building has been called by local historians the finest example of Federal-period Georgian-style architecture. Don also caught some blue crab off the dock! Don and Lisa had to leave that day, so we said adieu! They are great traveling partners, love to do the dishes; and we drink the same cocktails! Actually, Lisa and I think the Dons were "bruthazs from anutha mutha."
