Herrington Harbor No - Oxford - St Michaels - Kent Island

Ahoy;

This will be my last post for a couple of months, as we are going home to celebrate our granddaughter Kylie's graduation and attend a "Stone" family reunion.  Hope to resume this adventure and continue North in early August.

Anyway, on May 12th we departed Soloman's Island at 9:30 am and arrived at Herrington Harbor North, near Deale MD at 3:30 pm.  Herrington Harbor No is HUGE with beautiful grounds, swimming pool and hot tub, a West Marine and Dockside restaurant on site.  We walked all over the grounds, went to the restaurant and listened to some great music!

Departed Herrington Harbor on May 13th and arrived at Oxford, MD at 3:00 pm.  You pass through a draw bridge at Knapps Narrows - it's a scenic area around Tilghman Island.  In Oxford we used the marina's bicycles and toured the Island.  On the 2nd day we took the bicycles across the Oxford-Bellevue Ferry.  This is the last remaining privately owned ferry in the United States. The ferry is for sale, if you want to buy it. I told Don - NO - you just retired; you don't need another job!  It was a beautiful 7+ mile ride through the countryside.  Love the town of Oxford, but always seem to miss the Highland Ice Cream as they're closed on Monday and Tuesday.

On May 15th we motored around the island to St. Michaels - home of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum.  You should't miss it, if you're ever in the area.  Did the tour of homes on our bikes - there is plenty of history in St. Michaels.  Funny thing is, that we probably could have ridden our bikes to St. Michael's faster than we motored over.....

On my birthday, May 17th, we made our way up the Eastern Bay to Queen Anne Marina on Kent Island.  Cady Girl will rest here, while we go home for some family fun!  It's always great to see Don's brothers and families when we're in Kent Island.

As I said above, we hope to return in August!  So, we will see you then! Safe Travels wherever Life take YOU!

Norfolk VA and my 1st LOCK!

When you leave Chesapeake VA heading North on the ICW, you get to wait for a swing bridge and then go through the NORTH LOCK!  Thank goodness for Joe, the Lock Master - who helped me secure the lines and told me I did great for my 1st time.  I think that was because I didn't swear - he said lots of other boaters do!   From there it was easy sailing to Norfolk, where you pass hundreds of Naval vessels.  Norfolk is the largest Naval yard in the world.  Glad to see our tax dollars at work! Norfolk - Hampton - Cape Charles - Onancock VA

Where to I begin??? When we left Norfolk, we had barely gone 1 mile and the US Coast Guard hailed us and came aboard to do an inspection.  YIKES!  Anyway, an hour later, they left us with just two warnings: 1.  We needed a sign to notify our guests that they could not dump their garbage overboard 2.  We needed a USCG book, that they said we would probably never use.  Go figure! NO FINES. After that, I navigated through one of the busiest seaports in the US over to Hampton VA.  We moored at the Safe Harbor, Bluewater. The marina was ok but the restaurant onsite had the best crab dip with homemade pita chips!  YUM. On May 3rd, Lisa and Don Hollwedel joined us - what fun to have them!  We took the tender over to Hampton and walked around, but there wasn't really much going on.  Hampton is the home of Catherine Johnson, the mathematician who worked with NASA and calculated data for the astronauts. The Rest of NC and on to Virginia

On April 24th we arrived at the Grand Manor Marina in Belhaven. Belhaven is a small community of less than 2000, but it's prime location on the north shore of the Pongo River, just eight miles from the Pamlico Sound which separates North Carolina's Inner Banks from its Outer Banks, makes it a small town that celebrates life on the water!  The Grand Manor Marina was terrific, with golf carts to use, free laundry, pickleball and other games on site. Located on the property is the beautiful River Forest Manor, a home built in 1904 and is the icon of Belhaven.  The manor now has a restaurant, Bistro 1904!  Our bartender, Harley, fixed fantastic beverages. And they even had Prosecco on tap!  The town has a great Ace Hardware store with a store called "Handpicked Sister" inside - they had all kinds of gifts and home goods.
